Workplace Ambience and Employee Retention in the Power Utility Industry in Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between workplace ambience and employee retention in the Power Utility Industry in Port Harcourt. The study utilized a cross-sectional correlational research survey design. Primary source of data was through structured questionnaire. The study was guided by two research questions and two research hypotheses. The population for this study was two hundred sixty employees randomly selected from the population of the study using the Krejcie and Morgan Table. The test for reliability of data collected was done using Cronbach’s Alpha of .966. To measure the validity of research instrument face validity was utilized while a Kaiser-Meyer-Oklin test with a result of .932 was obtained to confirm that there are variables in the study. The hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The findings revealed positive significant relationship between workplace ambience and Employee Retention in the Power Utility Industry in Port Harcourt. The study concluded that providing a pleasant work environment would greatly enhance organizational citizenship behaviours which would n turn lead to satisfactory career progress and long tenure and subsequently employee retention. The study recommended that organizations should provide good working environment for their employees to increase the likelihood that employees will stay with their current organization.
