Training of Nigerian Police Personnel and Insecurity in Nigeria: A Study of Rivers State Police Command
Abstract
The paper investigated the training of Nigerian Police personnel and insecurity in Nigeria with emphasis on Rivers State Police Command. Nigeria today is confronted with numerous security challenges; kidnappings for ransom, armed conflict between herdsmen and farmers, Boko Haram, Banditry, and armed robbery among others. These security challenges posed a grave danger to the socioeconomic development of the country as development cannot occur in an atmosphere of insecurity. The study's objective was to: examine the impact of inadequate training of Nigerian Police personnel on the fight against insecurity in Rivers State; and investigate the impact of corruption on insecurity in Nigeria. The structural functionalist theory was adopted for the study. Primary and secondary sources of data were utilized. Primary data involved the use of interviews while secondary sources involved information from textbooks, journals, articles, etc. The study found that the major challenges affecting the Nigerian Police Force are; lack of training and the use of outdated weapons by personnel etc. training is rarely provided for personnel of the Nigerian Force and this has made it difficult for personnel to leave up to the billing in terms of confronting security challenges that confront the country. In a scenario where training is provided, they are not adequate to meet the demand of 21st-century Policing as seen in other developed climes. The study recommends that Nigerian governments should encourage the Nigeria Police with adequate training to ensure they meet their constitutional responsibility.
