Quality Assurance Indices in Secondary Education and Sustainable Economic Development in Nigeria

Osuji, Catherine U. PhD

Abstract

This study investigated quality assurance indices in secondary education and sustainable economic development in Nigeria, focusing on how educational quality metrics contribute to long- term economic growth and social progress. The research investigates five critical quality assurance indices: curriculum relevance, teacher qualifications, learning outcomes, infrastructure adequacy, and stakeholder engagement, analyzing their collective impact on Nigeria's sustainable development goals. The study revealed that current quality assurance practices often fall short of established standards, particularly in areas of curriculum relevance, teacher qualifications, infrastructure quality, and stakeholder engagement, creating a significant gap between policy formulation and implementation at the secondary school level. The study emphasized the need for a systematic approach to implementing quality assurance measures, involving various stakeholders including government agencies and educational institutions. The research proposes specific suggestions for enhancing each quality assurance index through public-private partnerships, standardized assessment frameworks, and structured stakeholder engagement mechanisms. These suggestions are designed to bridge the existing gap between educational outcomes and economic development needs while ensuring sustainable practices. The study concludes that improving quality assurance in secondary education is fundamental to achieving sustainable economic development in Nigeria. It advocates for increased investment in educational quality assurance mechanisms and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of recommended measures.
