Migration, Religion, And Social Integration: How Faith Communities Shape the Experiences of Displaced Populations

Pius Barinaadaa Kii, Ph.D.

Abstract

This research observes the impact of faith communities on the social integration of displaced people, especially related to environmental and climate change-induced migration. Although migration scholarship now increasingly acknowledges the role of religion in shaping patterns of mobility and settlement, the empirical synthesis remains patchy. The goal of the study is to (i) analyze the support or constraints posed by religious institutions to migrants’ integration in cultural contexts, and (ii) explore faith-based practices and climate change displacement nexus. Based on peer-reviewed articles, institutional report as well as global migration frameworks, data for the present study has been sourced. The study adopts a qualitative interpretative research design analysis adopted is a thematic content analysis. The study shows that faith communities can be effective intermediaries providing emotional strength, humanitarian care, social networks and advocacy while managing attitudes of receiving societies towards climate migrants. Yet religious norms can also strengthen boundaries, create exclusion, or affect mobility choices. The research shows that religion is not only a cultural trait but a mediating factor operating both in the experience of displacement and the expression of integration. According to the document, fostering strong collaboration between state and religious actors is paramount to the climate mobility challenge and crisis. The study advances migration scholarship by developing a synthesized, interdisciplinary model that links migration theory, religion, and climate mobility, thereby enhancing conceptual clarity and informing evidence-based policy interventions.
