Industrial Democracy as a Strategic Framework for Overcoming Organizational Conflict in the Global Workplace
Abstract
Industrial democracy has gained relevance as a pluralistic framework for promoting employee voice, participation, and partnership in modern workplaces. Rooted in participative decision-making theory, industrial democracy argues for shared governance between employees and management over organizational processes, thereby reducing antagonistic relationships and fostering mutuality of interests. This paper provides an extensive scholarly analysis of the role of industrial democracy in overcoming organizational conflicts across global workplaces. The study critically examines the conceptual evolution, dimensions, mechanisms, and principles of industrial democracy and links them to the foundations of conflict management. Specifically, the paper explores how industrial democracy facilitates conflict prevention, early conflict detection, and participatory resolution. Furthermore, it highlights the centrality of emerging technological tools such as Artificial Intelligence-enabled communication platforms, digital suggestion schemes, cloud- based performance dashboards, and e-governance systems in deepening democratic ethos at work. The implications of industrial democracy for key stakeholders: employees, managers, trade unions, employers’ associations, governments, and HRM professionals, are extensively discussed. Anchored on Participative Decision-Making Theory , the paper argues that shared decision-making enhances commitment, social exchange, and perception of justice, which in turn mitigates adversarial conflicts. The study concludes that adopting industrial democracy represents a proactive HRM strategy for creating high-trust, resilient, innovative, and low-conflict workplaces across the globe.
