Rethinking Curriculum Design for the 5th Industrial Revolution: A Comprehensive Literature Review

Abstract

The advent of the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) marks a shift toward integrating human-centric values with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and quantum computing. Unlike its predecessor, which focused on automation and digitization, 5IR emphasizes empathy, sustainability, and collaborative intelligence between humans and machines. This evolving context necessitates a fundamental rethinking of curriculum design in education systems worldwide. This literature review explores current debates, models, and innovations in curriculum design that align with the values and demands of the 5IR. It examines interdisciplinary learning, personalized education, digital integration, and the incorporation of social-emotional learning and ethical reasoning. The paper concludes with policy recommendations and future directions for building resilient, adaptive, and inclusive education systems that prepare learners for the socio- technical realities of the future.
