Abstract

This study investigated the effect of social and environmental sustainable procurement on the performance of rice production firms in Benue State, Nigeria, addressing persistent challenges of low productivity, environmental degradation, and social inefficiencies in the rice value chain. Independent variables included the environmental aspect (eco-friendly sourcing, waste management, pollution control) and social aspect (fair labour practices, community engagement, worker welfare) of sustainable procurement, while the dependent variable was firm performance (measured by cost-effectiveness, quality output, and operational efficiency). The population comprised 193 top, middle, and operating management staff plus field workers from 30 registered rice production firms across Benue State's three senatorial zones. A census sampling technique was adopted, including all 193 respondents. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with data collected via structured 5-point Likert-scale questionnaires. Instrument validity was ensured through expert validation and factor analysis, while reliability was confirmed via test-retest method. Multiple regression analysis tested the hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed significant positive effects of both aspects: environmental sustainable procurement and social sustainable procurement, rejecting both null hypotheses. The regression model explained 80.7% of the variance in firm. The study concluded that social and environmental sustainable procurement serves as a strategic driver for enhancing cost-effectiveness, quality output, and operational efficiency in Benue's rice firms. The study recommended, amongst others, investing in green technologies, precision farming, and eco-efficient inputs; and strengthening ethical sourcin
