Abstract

Internal security is always a boost to national development, without internal security national development will always fail. Even when a country faces external aggression of any form, the populace may not feel it as much as they will feel internal insecurity. Internal security is always the concern of all because of its implications on the socio-economic, cultural, political and religious developments of the people hence security of life and property are of the primary purpose of government. This paper examines the Nigerian police force and the challenges of internal security: need for manpower development. This calls for appropriate and adequate police education which will create a modern police organization that can secure the country. This paper therefore, accepts that the Nigerian Police Force today constitutes a serious threat to the internal security of the nation, but strongly believes that with appropriate and adequate police education, the Nigerian Police Force can secure the people and their property and restores the citizen’s confidence in it. The paper adopted qualitative research design, using secondary sources of data, which involve the use of documentary evidence to justify the essence of the research. The findings reveal that Nigeria had an efficient Police Force that ensured security of lives and property of the citizenry, until recently the current Nigerian Police Force has so freely endangered the safety of Nigerians and their property, thus Nigeria as a country cannot do without a police organization, but it should be one which members are endowed with knowledge and intelligence.
