Influence of Senior Secondary School Physics Curriculum Content Coverage on Students Attitude in Plateau Central Nigeria

Abstract

The study was conducted mainly to find the influence of senior secondary school physics curriculum content coverage on student’s attitude in Plateau central, Nigeria. The study employed survey research design. The population of the study comprised of 3284 students and the sample was made up of 330 SS II physics students. Three research questions were answered and three hypotheses were tested in the study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to answer questions and test the hypotheses stated. Three instruments were used in collecting data for the study namely; Physics Teachers Content Coverage Questionnaire , Students’ Attitude to Physics and Physics Achievement Test The three instruments were validated by three experts. The computed validity indices were as follows: 0.81 for the SAPCCQ, 0.76 for the PAT, and 0.71 for the PTCCQ. The reliabilities of PTCCQ, SAPQ, PAT, were found to be Inter-rater of value of 0.76, Cronbach alpha with a value of 0.86 and test-retest reliability of 0.84. The findings revealed that there is no significant influence of supervisory activities of Ministry of Education officials on physics curriculum content coverage at the senior secondary school level in Central Zone, Plateau State, Nigeria. That there is a significant influence of curriculum content coverage on students’ attitude towards physics in senior secondary schools in Central Zone, Plateau State Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that Ministries of Education and all stakeholders should frequently supervise teachers to curb lousiness, laziness and sluggishness on the part of teachers to ensure proper coverage of academic contents of physics in schools.
