Abstract

This study evaluated the effectiveness of formal education in promoting socioeconomic and cultural development in underdeveloped communities of Sokoto State, Nigeria, using the defunct Silame Local Government Area now comprising Silame, Binji, Tangaza, and Gudu Local Government Areas as a case study. A mixed-methods descriptive survey design was adopted, integrating quantitative data from education records and household surveys with qualitative insights from key informant interviews. A total of 380 respondents were selected through a multistage sampling technique. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed substantial disparities in educational effectiveness across the LGAs. Tangaza demonstrated relatively higher effectiveness, recording 49% girl-child enrolment, 74% qualified teachers, and 61% functional school sanitation coverage, while Gudu exhibited consistently low effectiveness indicators, with 28% girl-child enrolment, 53% qualified teachers, and 22% sanitation coverage. The Chi-square result confirmed a statistically significant association between tertiary educational attainment and socioeconomic outcomes (?2 = 22.46, p = 0.001), with communities recording higher educational attainment showing greater participation in health, agricultural, and community development programmes. The study further found that formal education contributed to gradual socio-cultural adjustments, including reduced early marriage rates and declining exclusive Qur’anic enrolment, although these effects varied across communities. Persistent challenges such as insecurity, infrastructural deficits, political interference, and cultural resistance were found to moderate educational effectiveness. The study concludes that while formal education has the capacity to support socioeconomic and cultural development in underdeveloped Sokoto State communities, its effectiveness remains uneven and highly context-
