Social Identity and Group Dynamics in Nigeria: A Study of Intergroup Relations and Conflict Resolution
Abstract
This study explores the intricate relationship between social identity and group dynamics in Nigeria, focusing on intergroup relations and the challenges of conflict resolution. By examining the diverse ethnic and cultural landscape of Nigeria, the research investigates how social identities, shaped by factors like ethnic identity, religion identity, and regional affiliations, influence interactions between groups. The paper was guided by a theoretical explanation of topics including social identity, group dynamics, intergroup connections, and conflict resolution. The study analyzes the nature of these intergroup relations, including instances of cooperation, competition, and conflict, and explores the underlying causes of tensions and disagreements. The study highlighted that if Nigeria does not address the numerous issues affecting all societal levels, it will be challenging to establish a peaceful and harmonious society free from violence and animosity. Lastly, the article argues that by encouraging conflict resolution strategies that respect and take into account a variety of ethnicities, Nigeria may leverage its rich cultural legacy to build a more peaceful society.
