External Interference as Impediment to the Advancement of United Nations (UN) Development Aspirations by Indigenous Societies in the Bamenda Grassfield

Langmia Ngongmun Oliver, Prof Nfi Joseph Lon and Prof Tem Protus Mbeum

Abstract

This paper analyses the impediments of external influences to the advancement of United Nations (UN) Development aspiration in the Bamenda Grassfield of Cameroon. Even though many indigenous efforts inadvertently reflected and advanced these aspirations, external interventions greatly hindered the successful advancement of the initiatives. Using the qualitative method of analysis with data drawn from primary and secondary sources, the paper argues that the advent of trade relations between the indigenes and the West, colonialism and imposition of Western development models, neocolonialism and the dependency syndrome became huddles to indigenous initiatives in advancing UN development aspirations. Besides, western fiscal and economic interventions made things worse as interventions and solutions from Western World further disrupted indigenous endeavors making it difficult for the region to maximize their potential in advancing UN development aspirations. The paper contends that if credence is given to grassroots or local initiatives, the realization of UN development aspirations could be enhanced.
