Religious Orientation, Self-Regulation and Psychological Wellbeing Among Correctional Officers in Benue State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated religious orientation, self-regulation and psychological wellbeing among correctional officers in Benue State. The study employed cross-sectional survey design where the participants were 210 correctional officers. They consisted of 158 (75.2%) males and 52 (24.8%) females. Their ages ranged from 25-58 years with a mean age of 40.90years (SD=5.16). The Religious Orientation Test, Self-Regulation Questionnaire, and Psychological Well-being Scale were used for data collection. Simple linear regression, Multiple linear regression and Standard Multiple regression were used to test the hypotheses. Results indicated that, there was a significant positive influence of religious orientation on psychological wellbeing among correctional officers. There was a significant influence of self-regulation on psychological wellbeing among correctional officers. In terms of the dimensions, the result indicated that; affect, awareness, and empowerment made significant positive contributions to psychological wellbeing. There was a significant joint influence of religious orientation and self-regulation on psychological wellbeing among correctional officers. It was concluded that religious orientation and self-regulation are significant determinants of psychological wellbeing among correctional officers. The study recommends that, the training modules used for recruiting correctional officers should include psychological interventions that will train officers to regulate themselves during contact with reluctant inmates and also during tense situations that requires composure.
