Abstract

Examination serves as an instrument to teachers, lecturers and many bodies to evaluate students and candidate's performance in a pretest, to gain admission, get employed or an avenue to recommend learners to an upper level of academics. This study is aimed at assessing the effectiveness and reliability of CBT used by JAMB annually in evaluating students' performance into universities of their choices, using Obio Akpor L. G. A of Rivers State as a case study. Descriptive research method and systematic sampling technique were used in this study. Two thousand (2000) questionnaires were used to obtain relevant information from two thousand (2000) candidates who sat for 2025 UTME examination. Three (3) research questions with fourteen (14) sub items were generated from the questions. The data collected were analyzed using the Assumed Mean Method. The results revealed the problems and solutions to smooth running of JAMB examination to enable 80% success across the nation. The problems identified were: lack of compulsory mock examination to familiarize candidates with task ahead; lack of feedback channels from candidates, parents, observers and examination officials; inadequate CBT centres across Nigeria; technical glitches; candidates' low digital literacy and disparities in access and socio economic inequality among candidates; logistical and organizational challenges and lack of transparency in scoring modalities most especially when issues of network connections and power failure arise. The solutions to these problems include: mandatory mock examination to all candidates; implementation of biannual/ quarterly UTME examination to reduce congestion; pressure among candidates; creation of real time feedback to candidates, parents and observers; creation of more centres across Nigeria to accommodate registered candidates; upgrading of UTME examination to cloud based to improve resilience, reliability, security, minimizing risk of system failure/disruption; introduction of
