Local Content Development Strategy and National Economic Competitiveness

Nwabuatu, Emmanuel Nnajiubah PhD

Abstract

Nigeria's economic competitiveness remains constrained by heavy dependence on imported goods, foreign expertise, and limited indigenous industrial capacity. This paper examines the relationship between local content development strategies and national economic competitiveness, with particular focus on Nigeria. Through synthesis of contemporary economic literature and empirical evidence, the study identifies critical mechanisms through which localized production and consumption can enhance competitiveness. The analysis reveals that strategic prioritization of domestic manufacturing, human capital development, and value chain integration substantially improves trade balances, employment generation, and technological innovation. The paper argues that a coordinated national framework combining fiscal incentives, regulatory mandates, and institutional support remains essential for translating local content policies into sustainable competitive advantage. Findings suggest that Nigeria can leverage its demographic dividend and natural resource endowments through deliberate local content strategies that strengthen industrial capabilities and export competitiveness.
