Neighborhood Markets and Socio-Economic Development of Residents of Calabar Metropolis, Cross River State Nigeria

Abstract

Neighborhood markets are local markets that serve the immediate community within a specific neighborhood. they play a crucial role in the process of economic development, but by virtue of its location and dispersion of producers and consumers with temporal structures has led to increasing pedestrian traffic, difficulty in transportation systems, and the overall movement of individuals within an urban environment. This study examined the nexus between neighborhood markets and socio-economic development of Calabar Metropolis of Cross River State, Nigeria. The major objective of this study is to examine the impact of neighborhood markets and socio-economic development of Calabar Metropolis. Survey design was used in the study and a sample of 392 market participants was used. The hypotheses formulated were tested using ordered logistic regression model. It was revealed from the logistic regression results that neighborhood markets, age, sex, occupation, marital status and infrastructural facilities have significant impact on income, employment and environment in Calabar metropolis of Cross River State. It was recommended that neighborhood markets in the metropolis should be expanded to cater for the economic realities of low-income households, offering essential commodities in smaller quantities, which are more affordable on a day-to- day basis. There should be improvement in the quality and standard of living of urban residents and proper sanitation to enhance the quality of environment of urban markets. There should be orderly relocation of street traders to the existing markets of the study area found to have some unutilized spaces, to avoid congestion.
