Digital Technology Integration into Educational Instruction Delivery in the Nigerian Context: Promises, Perils, and Panaceas

Abstract

The integration of digital technology into educational instruction delivery is rapidly redefining pedagogical landscapes across the globe. In Nigeria, where educational systems face persistent challenges including overcrowded classrooms, limited instructional resources, and teacher shortages digital technology holds immense promise for transformation. This contextual literature-based study critically examines the multifaceted implications of digital technology integration into Nigeria’s instructional delivery systems, with a focus on its promises, perils, and potential panaceas. The paper draws on an extensive review of relevant literature, policy documents, and global best practices to explore the promises of digital integration. These include improved access to quality instruction, personalized and student-centered learning, enhanced teacher effectiveness, and the bridging of urban-rural educational divides. However, the review also unveils numerous perils that hinder seamless integration, such as infrastructural deficits, inadequate digital literacy among teachers and learners, inconsistent implementation of educational technology policies, high costs of digital tools, and socio-economic disparities that exacerbate digital exclusion. In response, the paper proposes strategic panaceas aimed at navigating these challenges and harnessing the full potential of digital technologies in education. These include robust investment in digital infrastructure, nationwide capacity- building for educators, development of inclusive ICT policies, and fostering multi-sectoral collaborations between government, private sector, and development partners. It also underscores the need for contextually adaptive digital learning models that reflect Nigeria’s socio-economic realities.
