Managing Cross-Cultural Team and Performance of Nigerian Banks

Abstract

The study examined the effect of managing cross cultural teams on performance of Nigerian banks. The specific objectives are to examine the effect of cross-cultural communication, leadership, and organizational culture on the performance of Nigerian banks. Using a quantitative research method with a cross-sectional design, the population of the study comprise of 333 staff members of five Nigerian banks in Asaba, Delta State. A sample size of 182 respondents was determined using Taro Yamani's formula. The sampling technique used for the study was the simple random sampling. Data collection was done via a structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. Descriptive and regression analyses were used to analyze the data collected for the study. The findings revealed that cross-cultural communication (? = 0.422, p = 0.000), cross-cultural leadership (? = 0.356, p = 0.000), and organizational culture (? = 0.279, p = 0.000) has a significant positive effect on bank performance. The study concludes that effective management of cross-cultural teams, strong leadership practices, and a positive organizational culture are essential for improving the performance of Nigerian banks. The study recommends investing in cross-cultural communication training, focusing on cross-cultural leadership development, and promoting a diverse, inclusive organizational culture to enhance bank performance and competitiveness in a globalized market. These findings have significant implications for management and policy- making within the Nigerian banking sector.
