Conducting Psychological Research in Nigeria: A Critical Review of Methodological Issues
Abstract
Psychological research in Nigeria has witnessed steady growth over the past few decades; however, it continues to grapple with profound methodological challenges that undermine the validity, reliability, and generalizability of findings. This article critically reviews the methodological issues that plague psychological research within the Nigerian context, drawing insights from an extensive review of secondary data, including books, peer-reviewed journal articles, institutional reports, and academic records. The review identifies several recurring limitations such as poor research design, inadequate sampling techniques, cultural inappropriateness of standardized instruments, insufficient statistical application, and weak adherence to ethical protocols. Additional challenges include limited access to funding, lack of replication studies, and the proliferation of predatory journals which affect the quality and visibility of research outputs. The study employed a descriptive approach, analyzing documented evidence from both local and international sources publication. The sources were systematically selected based on relevance to Nigerian psychological research and methodological critique. Through thematic synthesis, five key domains of methodological concern were identified and evaluated. The study concludes that these problems are systemic and recommends improved methodological training, culturally relevant tools, ethical oversight, and research collaboration to strengthen the credibility and global relevance of psychological research in Nigeria. Addressing these issues is critical for advancing the credibility, applicability, and global competitiveness of psychological research in Nigeria.
