The Influence of Industrial Dispute Management Practices on Academic Performance in Nigerian Universities in Enugu State

Ogueri Candy Vincent

Abstract

The study evaluated the influence of industrial dispute management practices on academic performance in Nigerian universities in Enugu State. The specific objectives were to: examine the influence of collective bargaining on student outcomes and ascertain the influence of grievance handling on graduation rates in Nigerian universities in Enugu State. The area of the study was Enugu State. The study employed a descriptive survey design. The primary source of data was a questionnaire. The total population consisted of 1,995 staff members. An appropriate sample size of 333 was determined using Freund and Williams’ statistical formula at a 5 percent margin of error. Out of the distributed questionnaires, 252 were returned and properly completed. Data was presented and analyzed, and the hypotheses were tested using the Z-test. The findings indicated that collective bargaining had a significant positive influence on student outcomes (Z = 9.386, p = .05), and grievance handling had a significant positive influence on graduation rates in Nigerian universities in Enugu State (Z = 11.150, p = .05). The study concluded that collective bargaining and grievance handling significantly and positively influence student outcomes and graduation rates in Nigerian universities in Enugu State. The study recommended, among other things, that university management and staff unions in Enugu State should institutionalize regular and transparent collective bargaining processes to proactively address staff welfare issues. This would help minimize strikes and ensure academic stability, thereby directly improving student outcomes such as timely graduation, academic performance, and emotional well-being.
