Monetary Policy and Private Sector Growth in Nigeria

Abebe Isaiah Tete

Abstract

This study assesses the effect of monetary policy on private sector growth in Nigeria, focusing on key policy instruments such as money supply, cash reserve requirement (CRR), and the monetary policy rate (MPR). Using ex-post facto research design, time series data from 1992 to 2024 was analyzed through various statistical methods including Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test, Johansen co-integration test, and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). The results indicate that money supply has a positive and significant effect on private sector output, with an increase in money supply enhancing liquidity and stimulating business investment. Conversely, the CRR was found to have a negative but significant effect, suggesting that higher reserve requirements limit the credit available for business expansion. Similarly, the MPR also has a negative insignificant effect on private sector growth, as higher interest rates discourage borrowing and reduce investment in the economy. The study concludes that a strategic balance in monetary policy is crucial for fostering private sector growth. Based on these findings, the study recommends a more flexible approach to monetary policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), aimed at increasing money supply during economic slowdowns while avoiding inflation. It also suggests moderating the CRR to encourage lending and keeping interest rates low to facilitate investment, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These measures, if effectively implemented, can promote a conducive environment for private sector growth in Nigeria.
