Performance Appraisal and Organizational Effectiveness in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined performance appraisal and organizational effectiveness in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were; to ascertain the effect of rating scales on employee experience in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia; to determine the effect of commitment to task on employees’ skill in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia; and to examine the effect of biodata on employees productivity in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia. The study employed survey design. Both primary and secondary data were used for the study. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as tables, frequencies, percentage and mean while simple regression model was used to test the hypotheses. The population of the study was 896 and the sample size was 276 which were determined using Bourley’s proportional technique. The findings revealed the following; that rating scales has significant effect on employees’ experience in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia; that commitment to task significantly affect employees’ skills in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia; and that biodata significantly affects employees’ productivity in the Abia State Ministries of Works and Agriculture, Umuahia. Based on the findings, the paper recommended among other things that the Abia State civil service should build-up commitment among employees by providing attractive employee’s performance appraisal in order to achieve both individual and organizational objectives.
