Appraisal of Career Stereotyping and Its Attendant Consequences on Job Preferences of Senior Secondary Students, Jos North, Plateau, Nigeria
Abstract
The study was based on the discriminatory and bias mindset which stereotypes have psychologically and emotionally predisposed unsuspecting youngsters to, especially, in our emergent society. The attendant consequences of this to skills, job loss, unemployment as well as all manner of unprofessional and ill-gained disposition cannot be overemphasised. The study adopted the cross-sectional design using SSII from the 22 government public schools in Jos-North LGA, Plateau State. The sample consisted of 201 female and male students selected using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) Table of Population and Sample. The study raised 5 research questions and 4 hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance, using t-test. A structured questionnaire made up of 38 items was designed with a 0.75 reliability coefficient obtained using Cronbach Alpha Method. The instrument was validated by experts in Counselling Psychology and Test and Measurement where the findings revealed that some disciplines in the languages and religion, pastoral careers are being stereotyped due to their disposition of not being economically viable; unlike careers like Medicine, Pharmacy, Architecture, Engineering, et cetera. It revealed also that continuous discrimination of careers can lead to a glut and other unprofessional actions, like bribery and corruption. It made some recommendations, which emphasised the need for students to seek professional guidance from counsellors. It drew conclusion, stressing on the need to have professionally trained counselling psychologists to offer professional services to assist students towards having the right information, in their chosen career paths; and drew some suggestions for further study.
