Career Planning Practices and Worker Engagement in Selected Commercial Banks in Nigeria

Lekue Barile Menewae Nwikiabeh, Ledee Friday

Abstract

This research examines the relationship between worker engagement and career planning practices in several Nigerian commercial banks. Self-evaluation, career exploration, and career goal development are the dimensions of career planning practices that are covered. Employee vigor, dedication, and absorption are indicators of employee engagement. 1,200 workers from five major banks—Access Bank, First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, United Bank for Africa, and Zenith Bank—were the subject of the study. Using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table to determine the proper sample size, a sample of 291 respondents was chosen. A structured questionnaire intended to evaluate aspects of career planning practices and worker engagement levels was used to gather data. The Cronbach Alpha method was used to confirm the research instrument's reliability, and all scale items exceeded the acceptable threshold of 0.70, confirming internal consistency. The Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient was used to test the hypotheses. Strategic implications for organizational performance and human resource development result from the findings, which offer empirical insights into how good career planning techniques affect employee engagement in the Nigerian banking industry.
