Influence of Artificial Intelligence Tools on Capacity Building of Lecturers in Public Universities in Rivers State

Abstract

This study adopted a descriptive research design to investigate the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools specifically Turnitin, QuillBot, and Scite on the capacity building of lecturers in public universities in Rivers State. The population of the study comprised 3,356 lecturers drawn from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University, and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. A sample of 357 lecturers was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula and selected through proportionate stratified sampling. Data were collected using a self- structured questionnaire titled “Influence of Artificial Intelligence Tools on Capacity Building of Lecturers Questionnaire (IAITCBLQ).” The instrument focused on the influence of Turnitin, QuillBot, and Scite on lecturers’ capacity building. Responses were measured on a four-point Likert scale, ranging from Very High Extent (4) to Very Low Extent (1). The questionnaire was subjected to face and content validation by experts in Educational Management and Measurement and Evaluation to ensure clarity, relevance, and appropriateness of the items. A pilot test was conducted with 20 lecturers from Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, yielding a Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.82, indicating that the instrument was reliable for data collection. Questionnaires were personally administered with the help of three research assistants, and all copies were retrieved to guarantee completeness and accuracy of responses. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions, while z-test statistics were employed to test the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance, with a decision criterion mean of 2.50. The study concluded that AI tools Turnitin, QuillBot, and Scite positively influence the capacity building of lecturers in public universities in Rivers State.
