Abstract

This research study presents a comprehensive economic analysis of food security among urban households in Kano State, Nigeria. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study investigates the factors influencing food security status, including monthly income levels, sex, age, educational level, and house size and dependency ratio. Structured questionnaire was administered to household heads in 6 of the local government areas located in the urban center of Kano State. Stratified random sampling was employed to select 125 households with 35 households to food insecurity group and 90 to food security group. The study used the descriptive statistics to analyze the data collected from the structured questionnaire. The findings reveal that educational status, monthly income, house size, dependency ratio have of household heads have significant impact in food security. High dependency and large house size promotes food insecurity in the households. The results also indicates that, as monthly incomes and educational levels increases, food insecurity incidence declines. The study recommends that households should invest in education to enhance household heads' ability to secure better-paying jobs, thereby increasing their purchasing power and food security and the State government should implement policies and programs that provide alternative revenue streams for households, such as farm-related enterprises or off-farm activities.
