Gambling and Addiction Risk Among Youth

Abstract

This study examines the correlation between gambling and addiction risk in betting platforms in Bayelsa State. The study adopted cross sectional and ex-post facto design. Data were generated by quantitative and qualitative method. The study intends to use purposive sampling techniques. A total population size of 205 and sample size of 136 was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula at 0.05 level of significance. Also, 136 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the respondents, while 117 copies were completed and retrieved. The instruments were validated with reliability above 0.7 co-efficient, using Cronbach Alpha technique. Three research questions and three hypotheses were raised which was tested with Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Ordinary Least Square Method and Partial Correlation for the moderating variable via SPSS 25 version. From the findings, the concept of gambling creates positive affects client’s poverty, psychotherapy and anxiety. In conclusion, legal gambling and illegal gambling has significant influence on the addiction risk. Based on the findings and conclusion, this study contributes to the knowledge that commitment gambling cripple’s client future dreams, healthiness and wellbeing which prevent the leading edge rather than the bleeding edge in the betting firms. It could be recommended among others that parents, and the government, should enforce and improve their watchdog roles by constantly supervising their wards when they are on school vacations to limit the activities of students who are addicted to gambling. Also, Parents /guardians, relatives, and so on should live by example in choosing and selecting the vocation that will have positive impacts in the life of their wards. The present-day government should see to the welfare of students in terms of funding, equipping, building and the provision of all educational facilities that will enable them to concentrate on their studies.
