Effects of Laboratory Activities and Lecture Method on Students’ Academic Performance in Practical Physics in Secondary Schools in Imo State

Abstract

The researcher in this study investigated the effects of laboratory activities and lecture method on students’ academic performance in practical physics in secondary schools in Imo State. Three research questions were asked and three corresponding hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. This study employed the quasi-experimental design using pre-test and post-test with experimental groups. The population of the study was made up of 3,285 SSII students (2,113 males and 1,174 females) in all the 65 public secondary schools in the study area. The sample was 112 students which consists 57 male and 55 female SS II students who offered practical physics using purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a researcher developed achievement test tagged “Practical Physics Performance Test (PPPT). The instrument was validated by two research specialists. A reliability coefficient of r=0.72 was obtained using Kuder-Richardson KR21 statistics. Research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. The null hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The result among others revealed that students taught practical physics using group and individual laboratory activities performed significantly more than students that were taught practical physics using lecture method. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that principals should organize training for teachers on how best to involve students in group laboratory activity during practical physics instructions so as to enhance students’ performance in practical physics. This could be achieved through seminars and workshops for teachers in secondary schools in Orlu Education Zone I, Imo State, Nigeria.
