Evaluation of Expectation and Satisfaction of Public Teaching Hospital Patients in South East, Nigeria
Abstract
This study, evaluated expectation and satisfaction of public teaching hospital patients in south east, Nigeria. The major objectives of the study were to ascertain the level at which public Teaching hospitals meet the expectations of their patients in South-East Nigeria, as well as to determine the extent of satisfaction these patients derive from accessing healthcare in public teaching hospitals in South East Nigeria. The study adopted survey research method with a structured questionnaire as the instrument for data collection. The sample size was made up of 384 respondents, out of a population of 1,280,200. The collated data were analysed using simple percentage method, while the mean scores for the scales were determined using average score formular. The major findings of the study showed that healthcare providers in public teaching hospitals in South East Nigeria meet the expectations of their patients. Therefore, the patients were satisfied with the services received from the public teaching hospitals. The researcher concluded that healthcare service providers in public teaching hospitals in southeast Nigeria offer healthcare services that are in line with patients’ expectations, leaving them satisfied and endeared to the teaching hospitals. It is therefore recommended that the recorded positive attitudinal disposition of public tertiary healthcare providers in south east should be replicated in other public institutions, especially, through the provision of a conducive working condition for their staff. Also, that public healthcare facilities as well as publicly owned customer based institutions should aim at meeting the expectations of its clients by ensuring that universal best practices are employed in the course of discharging their duties.
