Conceptualizing Waste Management and Green Business Models in Ogoni Land

Abstract

This paper theoretically explores the intersection of sustainable waste management practices and the adoption of green business models as pathways to environmental restoration and economic revitalization in Ogoni Land. Drawing upon ecological modernization theory, stakeholder theory, and sustainable development theory, the paper argues that conceptualizing waste not as a liability but as a resource can drive circular innovation, enhance ecological integrity, and stimulate inclusive economic growth. The dimensions of waste management - waste minimization, resource recovery, and sustainable disposal - are critically examined in relation to their potential to enable green business approaches such as eco-enterprise development, cradle-to-cradle manufacturing, and industrial symbiosis. Through a conceptual framework, this study establishes a predictive link between waste management strategies and green business outcomes. It underscores the necessity of community engagement, regulatory alignment, and green investment to operationalize sustainable models. Consequently, the paper contributes to theoretical discourse by contextualizing green transformation within a region characterized by ecological devastation and socio-political neglect. It also offers a strategic blueprint for integrating environmental regeneration with economic empowerment in resource- dependent communities. It is recommended that the government and development partners establish a green economic empowerment program in Ogoniland. They should develop an integrated waste management master plan for the region and institutionalize stakeholder governance through a multi-level green council. These will ensure inclusive governance, promote transparency, and foster collective accountability in matters related to waste management and sustainable business practices.
