Community Education Programmes for Promoting Sustainable Healthy Living Amongst Ex-Footballers in Rivers State

Abstract

The study examined the community education programmes for promoting sustainable healthy living amongst ex-footballers in Rivers State. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and a sample size of four hundred forty-three (443) which comprises three hundred and thirty-four (334) males and one hundred and nine (109) female ex-professional footballers were randomly drawn. A questionnaire titled: Community Education Programmes for Sustainable Healthy Living Amongst Ex-footballers in Rivers State developed by the researcher was used to obtain data. Three experts from Faculty of Education validated the instrument and the reliability was determined by using Cronbach Alpha Statistic tool which yielded average coefficient value of 0.77. Base on the finding, it was concluded that community education programmes are instrumental to promoting sustainable healthy living among ex-footballers in Rivers State. The study concludes that health literacy programmes and recreational literacy programmes, would promote sustainable healthy living amongst ex-footballers in Rivers State to a high extent. It was recommended among others that the Government at all levels in partnership with Agency for Adult and Non-formal Education should regularly fund and establish more health care centers in communities to enable ex- footballers have access to literacy skills required to enhance healthy living practices, government and non-governmental health organizations should partner with facilitators to establish recreational parks and centers to enhance ex-footballers participation in recreational activities just as they were during active service.
