Personality and Gender as Factors in Insomnia

Abstract

The prevalence of insomnia in the general population ranges between 8-40% depending on the definition, and its prevalence spans even among lecturers of higher institution of learning. In an attempt to ascertain gender differences and genetic dispositions that exist among university lecturers towards insomnia, this study investigated personality and gender as factors in insomnia. A total of two hundred and twelve (212) participants, between the ages of 35-68 years, with a mean age of 47.82 and standard deviation of 4.84, sampled using homogenous purposive sampling technique from the population of South-East Nigeria state Universities lecturers. Insomnia Severity Index developed by Bastein, Vallieres and Morin (2001) and Extraversion and Neuroticism dimensions Big Five Inventory developed by John, Donahue and Kentle (1991) were used as research instruments. Cross sectional survey design was adopted while two-way Analysis of variance F-test was applied to analyze the scores obtained from the participants. The results revealed gender as a significant factor in insomnia F(1,208) = 90.53, P < .001 level of significance and personality also a significant factor in insomnia f(1,208) = 153.11, P <.001 level of significance, and interaction effect of gender and personality F(1,208) = 16.67, P <.001 level of significance. It was therefore recommended that university management should be sensitive as to assign female lecturers fewer responsibilities than their male counterparts since workload and family load may jointly affect their wellbeing, hence insomnia.
