Sustainable Supply Chain Management Practices and Impact on Business Performance in UK Small and Medium Enterprises

Khatereh Saedifar

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of the adoption and effectiveness of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM) practices on performance of UK Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). A sample of 150 UK SMEs drawn across manufacturing, retail, and service sectors was used for this study. Data were analysed using regression analysis with the aid of SPSS. The analysis revealed that there is a positive and significant relationship between sustainable supply chain management practices and operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. The study found that SMEs are challenged by restricted resources, low level of proficiency, and complexity of measurability. The study identified principal SSCM practices, such as cooperation with suppliers, green logistics, reducing waste, and responsible- minded sourcing, and the impact of these practices on business performance metrics such as operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and financial performance. The concludes that to unlock maximum benefits from SSCM, policymakers and stakeholders are encouraged to develop tailored support programs, such as streamlined reporting templates, capacity-building activities, and incentives to induce sustainability practices in SMEs. The study therefore recommends that strategic collaboration and access to resources can enable SMEs to break through the identified obstacles, apply SSCM effectively, and attain sustainable development in UK market.
