Educating Builders of Africa’s Future: The Role of ALU’s IBT Program in Fostering Pan-African Trade Competencies

Abstract

Africa’s continental integration hinges on a workforce able to navigate the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and realise Agenda 2063’s “skills revolution.” This study interrogates whether the African Leadership University’s re-engineered BSc (Hons) International Business & Trade (IBT) can supply that talent. Drawing on a 1,934-page documentary corpus analysed in NVivo and framed by Human Capital Theory, Innovation Diffusion, and Post-colonial Pedagogy, we benchmarked IBT against seven flagship business programmes across five sub-regions. The resulting Curriculum Alignment Index (CAI) places IBT at 7.9—roughly double the peer mean of 4.0 (t = 21.32, p < .001; Cohen’s d = 8.06) owing to its 90 % Africa-centric content, 65 % experiential hours and 80 % blended delivery. Early graduate signals corroborate this curricular edge. A six-month tracer (n = 22) found 72 % of alumni working in AfCFTA-related sectors, a median first-year salary of US$10,473—five times the regional graduate average—and an employer Net Promoter Score of +86. These outcomes suggest that IBT graduates act as immediate implementation agents, diffusing trade-facilitation know-how within logistics firms, chambers of commerce and policy secretariats. Methodologically, the study combines comparative programme review, inferential statistics, and thematic coding to offer the first empirically grounded evaluation of an AfCFTA-aligned business curriculum. Practically, it identifies five low-cost, high-leverage design elements—including a Pan-African case-study bank and a two-stage internship loop—that can be replicated across African higher-education institutions. We conclude that ALU-IBT provides a scalable blueprint for closing Africa’s trade-skills gap and accelerating continental economic integration. Future research should test these findings longitudinally through the programme’s five-year monitoring and evaluation roadmap, which captures graduate AfC
