Abstract

This position paper dwells on the number of compulsory questions to be answered in an essay test as it affects fairness and objectivity. Essay tests, which require students to generate responses rather than select them, assess critical thinking, comprehension, and the ability to articulate ideas. The number of question(s) required to be answered can influence several aspects of performance, including time management, depth of analysis, and cognitive load. When fewer compulsory questions are provided, students may have the opportunity to offer more thorough and reflective responses, potentially leading to improved performance. However, fewer questions may also limit the breadth of content assessed, potentially favouring students who are stronger in specific areas. Conversely, increasing the number of compulsory questions may enhance the test’s ability to cover a wider range of topics, but it can also increase pressure on students, leading to rushed responses, superficial analysis, and diminished overall performance.
