Abstract

This study investigated the influence of principals’ and zonal directors’ communication skills and counselling approaches on teachers’ job performance in Bwari Area Council (BAC), FCT- Abuja. This study was guided by two research questions with two corresponding objectives and two null hypotheses. A descriptive survey design was used for the study. The respondents were a sample of 300 teachers drawn from a total population of 874 teachers from all the 13 public senior secondary schools in Bwari Area Council FCT-Abuja. An instrument titled “Influence of Principals and Zonal Directors’ Communication Skills on Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (IPZDCSTJPQ)” was used for data collection. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study indicated that principals and zonal directors’ communication skills had significant influence on teachers’ job performance in secondary school in Bwari Area Council FCT-Abuja. Based on the results of the findings, it was recommended that principals should communicate clearly and seek the opinion of the teachers in decision making of the school and zonal directors should always give clear instruction to the teachers and should not use ambiguous words to communicate with the teachers.
