Abstract

Students interest in learning is influenced by several variables, of which variables related to the strategy of classroom interaction influences learning interest to a large extent. Hence, the purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of participatory learning activities on students’ interest in Social Studies in junior secondary schools in Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria. To achieve the objective a quasi-experimental design with one comparison and one experimental group was employed. Accordingly, the population of 2,335 having 1,146 males and 1189 female students of which the experimental group had 89 students and the control group had 90 students that participated in the study. The instrument used for data collection was Social Studies Students Interest Scale (SSSIS) for both the pre-test and post-test. The data collected were analysed with mean and standard deviation to analyse and ANCOVA to test the hypotheses formulated at at 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicated that students in the experimental group had a higher mean score (96.42) after treatment using participatory learning activities than those in the control group (44.29) who were not given treatment. It was also found that there was a significant effect of participatory learning activities on interest of students to Social Studies.Based on the findings recommendations for future consideration were forwarded.
