Abstract

This study explores the challenges associated with teaching and learning mathematics at Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, Nigeria. Despite the diverse challenges present in this academic context, the investigation focused on five primary areas: effective teaching and learning styles, mathematical knowledge for teaching, foundational mathematics and transition to university-level study, students' attitudes toward mathematics, and the conduciveness of the learning environment. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings highlighted several critical issues, such as students' generally negative attitudes toward mathematics, weak foundational knowledge, and inadequate preparation from secondary school for the demands of university-level mathematics. Other significant challenges identified included difficulties in adapting to modern teaching practices, the impact of living off- campus on academic performance, and limited access to essential resources, including updated reference materials, modern mathematics software, and current academic journals. The study concludes with practical recommendations to address these challenges. Key suggestions include ensuring that both lecturers and students have access to the necessary mathematics resources, as well as adopting teaching methods that foster active student engagement. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of expanding infrastructure to accommodate PLASU's growth and position the institution as a leading academic center, capable of supporting an expanding and diverse student body.
