Abstract

The study assessed the influence of instructional materials, on effective implementation of Universal Basic Education program in Public Junior Secondary Schools in Lagos State. Three research questions were formulated as the basis of investigation. Descriptive survey research design was adopted, because the study sought for the collection of information from a representative sample. A 16-item structured questionnaire was administered to 200 respondents randomly selected from the population and data collected was analysed using mean and frequency count. The study established that the use of instructional materials facilitates students’ interest and academic performance in schools, relevant instructional materials are not available for teachers’ use and there are challenges facing the UBE teachers in accessing relevant instructional materials for effective teaching-learning process. It was therefore recommended, that The government should provide adequate instructional materials and should not be limited to the use of textbooks and atlases alone, in order to achieve quality education, teachers should be encouraged and supported to improvise locally based instructional materials and the government should come up with decisive plans to leverage the challenges of inadequate instructional materials and teaching equipment to enhance effective and efficient delivery of instructional objectives in UBE centres.
