Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility Expenditures on the Profitability of Selected Consumer Goods Companies in Nigeria.

Abstract

The paper investigated the effect of corporate social responsibility expenditures on the profitability of selected consumer goods companies listed on the Nigeria Exchange group. Objectives are to; determine the effect of corporate social responsibility on the return on assets and profit after tax of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria Secondary data was collected for the period of ten (10) years; 2014 – 2023. E x-post Facto research design was adopted. Population was 20 listed consumer goods; the data were analysed using the ordinary least square method of regression. Findings revealed that corporate social responsibility have a negative and significant effect on the return on assets of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria. The study then concluded that there is no significant relationship between corporate social responsibility and the selected consumer goods companies listed on the Nigeria Exchange group and that there is no substantial evidence of causality between corporate social responsibility and consumer goods company profitability in Nigeria.
