Abstract

The study was carried out to investigate the influence of school environment on academic achievement of public primary school pupils in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The design of the study is descriptive survey, the population comprised of 160 teachers and the sample size for the study was 50 . A self-developed 29 - items questionnaire which was validated by experts and was trial- tested using teachers outside the geographical scope of the study to ensure the reliability was used for data collection in this study.. Four research questions guided the study. The results of the data analysis revealed that staff offices, classroom spaces for teaching pupils and halls for the conduct of examination represent the major areas that to a great extent affect the academic achievement of pupils in public Primary Schools in Chikun Local Government Area of kaduna state. Availability of office desks, current and updated books, as well as the presence of qualified library assistants influence the academic achievement of pupils in public primary schools. It was also revealed that health services, teaching aids, provision of generators, fencing of school for security reasons and provision of power supply are important variables that positively affect the academic achievement of pupils in public primary schools. On the other hand poor proximity of pupils to schools, insufficient qualified teachers, lack of classroom markerboards, absence of functional libraries and textbooks represent the major areas that negatively affect the academic achievement of pupils. Based on the above, the researcher recommends that primary schools should be provided with functional libraries, adequate classroom buildings, conducive and secured environment as well as provision of good sporting facilities to help enhance pupils’ academic achievement and teachers’ effectiveness in the school.
