Correlation Analysis of Growth and Yield Parameters of Wheat ( Triticum Aestivum L.) at Aliero and Jega, Sudan Savannah Zone of Nigeria

A U Fakai, and R.G Aminu

Abstract

This study investigated the relationships between selected growth and yield parameters of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at Aliero and Jega, Kebbi State, Nigeria, during the 2016/2017 dry season. The field experiment evaluated four planting dates (1 November, 15 November, 1 December and 15 December 2016) and three planting methods (drilling, dibbling and broadcasting) using a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications at each location. The wheat variety Gan-Atilla was used. Reported correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationships between grain yield and selected agronomic traits. At Aliero, grain yield was positively correlated with number of grains per spike (r = 0.833), total biomass (r = 0.779), 1,000- grain weight (r = 0.754), number of tillers (r = 0.725) and plant height (r = 0.612). At Jega, grain yield showed positive correlations with total biomass (r = 0.891), number of tillers (r = 0.839), 1,000-grain weight (r = 0.819), number of grains per spike (r = 0.817) and plant height (r = 0.597). Leaf length and leaf width had comparatively weak positive correlations with grain yield at both locations. Among the reported relationships between yield components, spike length was positively correlated with number of grains per spike at Aliero (r = 0.730) and Jega (r = 0.723). Overall, the results indicate that grain number per spike, total biomass, tiller number and 1,000- grain weight were more strongly associated with grain yield than the measured leaf dimensions. These findings identify important trait relationships for further investigation of wheat productivity in the study area. However, the absence of complete statistical output limits conclusions about statistical significance and differences between locations.
