Analysis of the Geographic Character tics Which Influenced the Distribution of Existing Traditional Settlements in the Cross- River Igbo Region Nigeria
Abstract
The work investigated the geographic charactertics which influenced the distribution of existing traditional settlements in the Cross-River Igbo region of Nigeria. Out of 120 villages inhabiting the region, 12 villages were randomly selected, two villages chosen from each major area. Identifiably, 385, houses (170 males, 215 female houses) were selected in addition to 30 Obu houses. Results indicate that climatic attributes like; temperature, rainfall, wind system, solar radiation, and relative humidity, influence the distribution, of traditional settlements in the Cross-River Igbo region. Among other issues, it was recommended that critical understanding of geographic features will enable architects to design residential houses that can achieve indoor thermal conduciveness as, achieved by these traditional buildings.
