The Adaptive Proficiency Acceleration Framework: A Diagnostic Driven Model for Individualizing Second Language Instruction

Raissa Enyonam Amele Amessouwoe, Kpoka Messanh Isaac, Julius Aderogba Odewabi

Abstract

Knowing which component of a learner's second language competence is limiting progress is only half the problem; the other half is choosing, calibrating, and delivering an instructional response that actually fits the diagnosis. A teacher told that a learner has a working-memory- related fluency barrier gains little from that label alone unless it is translated into a specific technique, at a specific intensity, with a specific point at which support is withdrawn. This paper develops the Adaptive Proficiency Acceleration Framework, a model that converts a component- specific diagnostic signal into a matched instructional response, calibrates how much scaffolding that response should carry, and specifies when scaffolding should fade as proficiency accelerates. Grounded in Vygotskian mediation within the zone of proximal development, aptitude-treatment interaction research, comprehensible input and noticing theory, and the formative-assessment literature on actionable feedback, the framework organizes nine response types, from input modification and corrective feedback to technology-mediated adaptive practice and peer-mediated tasks, into a four-stage adaptive response cycle: signal interpretation, response selection, scaffolded delivery, and reassessment with fading. The paper states falsifiable propositions about which response types match which diagnostic signals, at what intensity, and specifies the evidence a future study would need to test whether matching a response to a diagnosis outperforms a generic, undifferentiated response. No intervention is reported here; the contribution is a decision architecture for individualizing instruction once a diagnosis exists, built so that a mismatch between response and diagnosis is itself detectable rather than absorbed into an unexplained null result.
