Domestic Violence in Christian Homes: Ethical Approach and Pastoral Response

Joshua Adefemi OWOJORI

Abstract

Domestic violence remains a critical issue within Christian homes, often shrouded in silence and stigma. This paper explores the ethical implications of domestic violence in Christian contexts and the pastoral responses necessary for effective intervention. It begins by examining the theological foundations that inform the understanding of family dynamics, love, and respect within Christian teachings. The ethical approach emphasizes the importance of recognizing the dignity and worth of every individual, advocating for a zero-tolerance stance on violence and abuse. The paper also addresses the complexities faced by victims and the Church, including the potential for victim-blaming and the challenges of seeking help within faith communities. Pastoral responses are proposed, focusing on creating safe spaces for dialogue, education, and support for both victims and perpetrators. This involves training church leaders and congregations to recognize signs of domestic violence and to respond appropriately and compassionately. Furthermore, the role of scripture is examined in providing hope and healing, alongside the integration of professional counseling resources. By fostering an environment of accountability, empathy, and active engagement, churches can play a pivotal role in addressing domestic violence and promoting healing within families. In conclusion, a proactive and ethical approach to domestic violence in Christian homes requires a commitment to pastoral care, education, and community support, ultimately reflecting the core Christian values of love, justice, and mercy.
