The Role of Big Data Analytics in Management Information Systems
Abstract
This paper examines the role of big data analytics in shaping the effectiveness of management information systems within modern, data-intensive organizations. The proliferation of digital transactions, sensor data, social media activity, and platform-based interactions has produced data environments characterized by high volume, velocity, variety, and veracity — conditions that traditional MIS architectures, built around structured, periodic reporting, were not designed to handle. Drawing on a conceptual synthesis of information systems theory (the DeLone and McLean IS Success Model), strategic management theory (the Resource-Based View), and technology adoption theory (the Technology-Organization- Environment framework), this paper argues that big data analytics capability is a critical antecedent of MIS effectiveness, and that this relationship is strengthened where IT infrastructure flexibility and a data-driven organizational culture are present. An explanatory, quantitative research design is applied to panel-style organizational data, using fixed-effects regression to test the direct effect of BDA capability on MIS effectiveness and the moderating role of IT infrastructure flexibility. The findings indicate that BDA capability has a positive and statistically significant effect on MIS effectiveness, and that IT infrastructure flexibility significantly strengthens this relationship. The paper concludes that MIS effectiveness in the big data era depends less on the presence of information systems per se, and more on an organization's analytical capability, infrastructure adaptability, and culture of evidence-based decision-making. Recommendations are offered for strengthening data governance, investing in scalable analytics infrastructure, and building organizational data literacy.
