ICT and Student Records Management in Niger Delta University Wilberforce Island Bayelsa State Nigeria

Godfrey Vera Zaccheus, Ebhonmeya Ekeata Loveth

Abstract

This study assessed the role of Information and Communication Technology in student records management at Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State. Specifically, the study examined the current methods and ICT tools employed in student records management, identified challenges associated with the adoption and utilisation of ICT, and assessed the level of ICT literacy and training among staff involved in student records management. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised 92 staff drawn from offices and units directly involved in student records management, from which a sample of 70 staff was selected using the Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination table. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means and standard deviations. The findings showed that ICT had been incorporated into student records management, particularly electronic course registration, although the efficiency of clearance and graduation processing, transcript generation, and biodata capturing and storage remained moderate. Poor internet bandwidth and connectivity emerged as the most notable ICT-related challenge, while inadequate funding, epileptic power supply, and inadequate ICT skills were not strongly perceived as major constraints. The findings further revealed that staff ICT literacy was generally satisfactory, with regular retraining and relatively high ICT compliance. However, ICT was not strongly perceived to have improved records security, confidentiality, or reduced loss and misplacement of files. The study concluded that ICT had contributed to student records management but required further improvement in connectivity, system integration, data security and operational effectiveness.
