Anireh, Uchenna Nicholas, Onwuanaku, Blessing, Happiness Nwanyi Elekwachi

Abstract

Leadership support is increasingly important to the sustainability and growth of organizations operating in dynamic and competitive business environments, particularly the banking sector. This study examined the extent of leadership support for organizational growth in deposit money banks in Rivers State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study determined the extent of emotional, instrumental, and participatory leadership support provided to employees in the selected deposit money banks. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 361 employees, consisting of 95 management staff and 266 administrative staff. A structured 15-item questionnaire was used for data collection, with responses measured on a four-point Likert scale. The instrument recorded an overall Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of 0.83. Data were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings indicated that emotional leadership support was provided to a high extent among both management and administrative staff, with mean scores of 3.35 and 3.46, respectively. Instrumental leadership support was also provided to a high extent, with mean scores of 3.46 for management staff and 3.39 for administrative staff. Similarly, participatory leadership support was provided to a high extent, with mean scores of 3.41 and 3.46, respectively. The study concludes that leadership support in the dimensions of emotional, instrumental, and participatory support is evident to a high extent in the selected deposit money banks. The study recommends that bank management should institutionalize supportive leadership practices through employee welfare initiatives, continuous training and development, constructive feedback, open communication, employee involvement in decision-making, and appropriate autonomy to strengthen organizational growth.
