An Ethical Enquiry into Youth Development from the Biblical Perspective in the Context of Nigerian Society, 2000–2023: A Case Study of Abia State
Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive ethical enquiry into youth development in Nigeria from a biblical perspective, with particular focus on Abia State between 2000 and 2023. The study interrogates the moral, spiritual, and socio-structural dimensions of youth development as understood through the lens of biblical ethics, examining the extent to which scriptural principles have informed or been neglected in policy formulation, community practice, and religious institutions responsible for youth formation. Drawing on qualitative data from primary and secondary sources, including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and documentary analysis, the study identifies a widening chasm between the biblical mandate for youth empowerment and the socio-economic realities confronting young people in Abia State. The findings reveal that structural unemployment, moral relativism, institutional failure, and the erosion of family and communal values have undermined holistic youth development in the state. Biblical prescriptions emphasising wisdom formation, character development, social justice, mentorship, and purposeful vocation are proposed as integrative frameworks for addressing these deficits. The paper recommends a deliberate biblical-ethical framework that involves churches, government agencies, educational institutions, and families in the co-creation of a robust youth development ecosystem in Abia State and Nigeria at large.
