Roof Systems as Socio-Technical Environmental Mediators in Climate- Responsive Housing: An Integrative Review and Conceptual Framework for Warm-Humid Tropical Environments

Ukanwa, Obinna Emmanuel

Abstract

Rapid urbanisation, a warming climate and growing reliance on mechanical cooling have sharpened concern about the thermal performance of residential buildings in warm-humid tropical environments. Because roofs bear the longest and most direct exposure to solar radiation of any envelope component, they are the principal mediators of heat exchange between the outdoor climate and the occupied interior. A large literature already exists on cool roofs, insulation, attic ventilation, radiant barriers and roofing materials, yet this knowledge sits awkwardly across building physics, architectural design, thermal-comfort research, energy studies and housing governance, rarely speaking across those boundaries. This paper responds through a theory-informed integrative review of residential roof systems in warm-humid tropical environments, synthesising literature from major academic databases thematically and reading it through Systems Theory and Ecological Modernisation Theory. The synthesis shows that roof performance is not a fixed material property but an emergent, socio-technical outcome produced by the interaction of climatic forcing, roof-system configuration, attic behaviour, ventilation, insulation and ceiling characteristics with occupant adaptation, construction practice, market conditions and institutional governance. No single roofing material or technology can explain thermal outcomes in isolation. The review further shows that roof-induced overheating shapes thermal comfort, cooling demand, household energy expenditure and wider environmental outcomes, while the diffusion of climate-responsive roofing technologies is itself governed by affordability, material availability, professional knowledge, construction competence and regulatory capacity. To hold these relationships together, the paper proposes a Socio-Technical Roof-System Framework built from three nested, interacting subsystems: a building-thermal subsystem, a household and construction- market subsystem, and an institutional and urban-environmental subsystem. Its central contribution is to recast the residential roof from a passive construction element into a socio- technical environmental mediator connecting climatic exposure, building thermal performance, occupant adaptation, energy demand and governance. The framework is offered as both an interpretive device for existing evidence and a research agenda for empirical work that can test and refine it, with the aim of supporting more climate-responsive housing design and policy across the warm-humid tropics.
